1,000 More E. Germans Flee to Austria
More than 1,000 East Germans managed to slip into Austria through Hungary’s relaxed border over the weekend, a West German Embassy spokesman said Monday in Vienna.
Early Monday, another 150 East Germans had arrived at the embassy to apply for papers allowing them to travel to West Germany, he said, adding: “The flood is continuing.”
More than 3,000 East Germans have managed to cross into Austria from Hungary since mid-May, when Budapest began dismantling its fortified border with Austria, he said. He added that some traveled directly to West Germany, bypassing Vienna.
Several hundred East Germans attending a symbolic picnic on the Austro-Hungarian border Saturday managed to slip into Austria through an open border crossing.
