At its recent annual convention the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) passed a resolution calling on all 77,000 members to report animal abuse to the union. The resolution states that no performer should be expected to work on a set where an animal is abused. “We have been working on this problem of cruelty to animals for two years,” said Bob Barker, a spokesman for the Coalition to Protect Animals in Entertainment. “There is now a raised consciousness. . . . “ Barker has been in the forefront of animal rights issues. “What I like about this resolution is that the actor or actress can call AFTRA and directly report the abuse,” Barker said. “Then AFTRA can call the enforcement agency, and something can be done.”
