Trabuco Canyon : Hearing Is Tonight on Development Plan

Share

A public hearing on a controversial county plan for development in the 6,500-acre Foothill-Trabuco area east of Mission Viejo is scheduled for 6:30 tonight at the Trabuco Canyon fire station.

Members of the 11-member Foothill-Trabuco Advisory Committee are also expected to comment on the plan to establish growth limits in the sparsely populated canyon and hill region on the edge of Cleveland National Forest. County planners have recommended allowing 1,700 new homes to be built in the area, and they support construction of a new two-lane road through the area to ease congestion. Environmentalists and many local residents oppose the plan, warning that it would ruin the area’s rural charm and destroy hundreds of oak trees and wildlife habitat.

The advisory committee, made up of local residents and property owners, is not expected to vote on the county plan until next Wednesday. The County Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the matter next month. The County Board of Supervisors will ultimately decide the issue.
