UC Irvine Notes : Men’s Soccer Team Begins Play Saturday

The UC Irvine men’s soccer team will start the season at 3 p.m. Saturday with an exhibition game at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Irvine also will play an exhibition game at Cal Poly Pomona at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Irvine has 13 players back from last year’s team that finished with a 7-12 overall record, finishing in fifth place in the Big West Conference.

The most notable returning player is senior midfielder Darren Bedolla, a first-team All-Big West selection in 1988. Bedolla led the Anteaters in scoring last year with five goals and six assists.

The Irvine women’s volleyball team will play an varsity-alumni match Thursday at 6 p.m. in Crawford Hall.

Irvine will participate in the All-Cal scrimmage tournament Aug. 30 at UCLA. The Anteaters will participate in pool play against UC San Diego at 11 a.m., UCLA at 12:15 p.m., Berkeley at 2:30, UC Davis at 3:45 and UC Riverside at 5. Each scrimmage match is best-of-three instead of the regular best-of-five format.
