P.M. BRIEFING : Sony’s Quarterly Profit Jumps 44%

TOKYO —
The Sony Corp. posted sharply higher earnings in the June quarter on good sales of electronics and records and confidently raised its profit and sales predictions for the rest of the year.
The maker of the Walkman portable cassette player said today that net profit in the three months rose 44% to $161.19 million on sales that were up 23% to $3.97 billion.
