Countywide : Report: $14,934 Spent at Emergency Shelters
County officials spent $14,934 to operate emergency shelters for homeless people at two National Guard armories last winter, according to a new county report.
The two armories were opened when temperatures dropped below 40 degrees or there was at least a 50% chance of rain.
Emergency shelters were set up at the armories in Santa Ana and Anaheim 28 times, and the cost of operating the shelters was paid for from the Homeless Shelter Charitable Trust Fund, which the county administers.
County officials established the trust two years ago to receive donations and pay for emergency care for the homeless. About 5,980 homeless people were served meals or allowed to sleep overnight at the armories, the report says.
County officials spent $4,614 on food and bedding at the shelters and nearly $10,320 on security. The armories again will be used this winter on an emergency basis to shelter homeless people.
