The condition of Nicholas, one of the only two beaked whales in captivity, worsened, according to officials at Marine World wildlife park at Vallejo. The 10-foot whales, of a species normally found only in the deepest ocean waters, were found beached Thursday on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Nicknamed Nicholas and Alexander, the two juvenile males were trucked 30 miles north to Marine World where they were placed in pools. While Alexander seemed to be beating the odds--only about 5% of beached marine mammals survive--Nicholas has “taken a turn for the worse,” park spokeswoman Mary O’Herron said.
