U.S. Firms Lead South Africa Withdrawal: A total of 277 foreign companies have pulled out of South Africa since 1984, 122 of them from the United States, according to a United Nations report. “United States companies . . . are more receptive to calls for corporate and social responsibility from shareholders and consumers” the report said. In comparison to the 122 U.S. corporations who have withdrawn subsidiaries from South Africa since 1984, only 56 British companies and 10 West German firms have followed suit.
