Said Aouita sped past Peter Elliott and Joseph Chesire on the final straight and won the mile in 3 minutes 51.97 seconds at an international track meet at Gateshead, England. Chesire was second in 3:52.46 and Elliott, a silver medalist in the 1,500 meters at the Seoul Olympics, finished third in 3:52.93.

Dalton Grant cleared 7 feet 8 inches in the high jump to raise his British record for the third time in three weeks. Grant failed in three attempts at 7-10 1/2.
