The car ran off the road and hit a telephone pole, killing his mother, who was in the front passenger seat, Thomas said. Montellano managed to get out of the car along with his stepfather, Eusebio Ortega Medina, 47, and a friend after the accident.

Montellano, who allegedly was intoxicated at the time, then ran away with the friend, identified as Mario Acevedo, 31, Thomas said. They were caught a short time later a few blocks away, she said.

Ortega suffered a neck injury and a broken collarbone. He was treated at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center.

Montellano was also arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Thomas said.
