Any athlete who competes in South Africa will be stripped of Olympic eligibility, the International Olympic Committee said in adopting one of its toughest anti-apartheid measures since expelling South Africa in 1970.

In other news at the IOC’s 95th session in San Juan, Puerto Rico, tennis was made a permanent medal sport, but with the provision that the International Tennis Federation suspend several tournaments it runs in South Africa. Kevan Gosper, an IOC vice president from Australia, said there is a chance that tennis could be knocked off the Barcelona schedule if that condition is not met.

The ban on Olympic eligibility for those who go to South Africa was contained in the tennis proposal. But Gosper said it would have the same impact on any athlete from any sport who competes in South Africa from now on.
