Left-wing Salvadoran guerrillas said they have accepted a government proposal to begin peace talks by mid-September and held out the possibility of announcing a unilateral cease-fire. Rebel commander Ana Guadalupe Martinez told a press conference in Mexico City that the Farabundo Marti Liberation Front has agreed that the talks should take place between Sept. 10 and 14. Such discussions would represent the first tangible progress achieved by the right-wing government of President Alfredo Cristiani, who took office June 1, to resolve the country’s long-running civil war.
