The Bush Administration plans meetings in Washington this month with Chinese officials on China’s bid to join an international trade body, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, State Department sources said. U.S. diplomats in Beijing invited Wang Shichun, of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade, to a Sept. 11-12 meeting in Washington to discuss the trade agreement and to continue bilateral talks on Chinese commercial policy, the sources said. Wang reportedly was surprised by the invitation. Bush banned high-level contacts June 5 after the Chinese crackdown on the pro-democracy movement, although some high-level meetings were held last month.
