Ram first-round draft choice Cleveland Gary has agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $1.8 million, he said Tuesday night.

Gary, the fullback from the University of Miami and the 26th player taken overall in the draft, said he would arrive in Anaheim late this evening.

“We got it worked out and I’m content,” Gary said from Florida.

Asked why it took all summer to reach an agreement, Gary replied: “That’s not my job, that it took so long. That’s all a part of business. I don’t get into that stuff.”

The Rams and Gary had agreed to terms on the money last week, but there was a hang-up on how his $750,000 signing bonus would be distributed. Some of the money was shifted to bring the total value of the package to $1.8 million.

Gary and his uncle aren’t expected in Southern California until late this evening, so the actual signing might not take place until Thursday.

Willie Gary was out of town on business Tuesday and could not be reached for comment.

His nephew, though, is ready to play football.

“The Rams drafted me in that spot for a reason,” he said. “My goal is to go out and win ballgames. I’ve got the contract part settled and out of the way and I’m elated.”

Gary set a single-season record at Miami with 57 receptions for 655 yards and is considered to be one of the top receiving backs to come out of college in years. He also rushed for 480 yards in 117 carries for the Hurricanes last season.
