* The Theatre Workers Project in association with the Los Angeles Theatre Center presented a dramatic reading of “A Cast of Thousands,” produced by Susan Tanner and directed by Scott Reiniger, on July 10. Net proceeds of $3,700 will be used to help establish a West Coast Archives of the WPA Federal Theatre Project at UCLA. Martha and Hubert Morehead were the dramatists.

* The Conejo Valley Historical Society held its 24th “Triunfo Ball Goes Western” on July 15 at the Calamigos Ranch in Malibu and raised $6,000. Proceeds will be used for the maintenance of the Stagecoach Inn Museum in Newbury Park. Norma Stafford was chairwoman.

* The Magic Johnson All-Star Classic held its fourth annual “Mid-Summer Night’s Magic” beginning with a dinner Aug. 5 at the Century Plaza. The All-Star Basketball Game was held Aug. 6 at the Forum in Inglewood. Along with Magic Johnson were Michael Jordan, Isaiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Mark Jackson, Mark Aquirre, Ron Harper, Spud Webb, John Salley, Kurt Rambis, Herb Williams, Reggie Miller, Karl Malone and Kevin Johnson. The benefit raised more than $1 million for the United Negro College Fund. Some of the sponsors were American Airlines, Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., California State Lottery, Carnation Co., Converse Inc., Federal Express Corp., Pepsi Cola and Polaroid. Golden Bird Inc. was again a patron for the event.

* PEN Center U.S.A. West’s first benefit performance of “Temptation” was held at the Mark Taper Forum on Aug. 13 and netted $950. Proceeds will be used to defend writers here and abroad who are threatened or imprisoned for their writing. Sharon Daley and Ben Benoit were co-chairs.

* St. Paul the Apostle Church held a screening of “Romero” at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Aug. 22 and netted an estimated $21,000. Proceeds will be donated to PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), St. Joseph Center and Paulist Communications.

* Minority AIDS Project (MAP) received a check for $20,000 on Aug. 30 from Rodney Carter, president of Gentlemen Concerned. Gentlemen Concerned, a minority men’s group since its founding in March, 1986, has raised $70,000 for Dignity House, MAP’s residential facility.
