Cudahy to Contract With Sheriff’s Dept.

Share

The Cudahy City Council has decided to break its contract with Bell for police services and switch to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

At a meeting Tuesday night in which opponents of the switch packed the chambers, the City Council voted 3 to 2 for a one-year, $1.6-million pact with the Sheriff’s Department. Council supporters said the change would beef up police patrols of the 1.1-square-mile city in Southeast Los Angeles County with only a slight increase in cost.

Numerous opponents of the move charged, however, that the Sheriff’s Department is already spread too thin and they fear that deputies will be slow in responding to calls.

Bell City Manager John Bramble said the loss of Cudahy’s 29% contribution to his city’s police budget will force layoffs in the 47-officer department. Bell has provided police services to Cudahy since 1974.
