Carson & Company: The Night Fight
Steve Weinstein’s Aug. 27 article, “Night Heat: The Talk-Show Competition Sizzles,” overlooks one of “The Tonight Show’s” strong points: its music.
Johnny Carson is a very hip gentleman and “The Tonight Show” band led by Doc Severinson bears this out. The music heard on the other late-night talk shows, including Arsenio Hall’s, lacks substance. When you overdo synthesizers, electronics and use basically two chord changes, you eventually hit a concrete wall musically.
