The New Zealand yacht Steinlager 2 maintained the lead over the 14 other maxi yachts on the ninth day of the Whitbread Round-the-World Race.
The Swiss entry Merit is lying second, about 60 miles adrift of Steinlager 2, with the British yacht Rothmans only three miles astern of Merit. The first leg of the 33,000-mile race is from Southampton, England, to Punta del Este, Uruguay.
