Eastern, Striking Pilots Begin Mediated Talks: Representatives of Eastern Airlines and its striking pilots union met for the first time with a federal mediator appointed to prod the two sides into reaching an agreement on a new contract. Federal mediator Sam Cognata, a 14-year veteran of the National Mediation Board, scheduled meetings with both sides at an undisclosed location, said David Bushnell, a spokesman for the board. “At this point, it is too early to say what the future schedule might look like,” Bushnell added.
