NATION : Jordanian Prince Urges Arafat Visa
WASHINGTON — Jordan’s Crown Prince Hassan today endorsed the idea of a U.S. visa for PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat to attend the U.N. General Assembly in New York later this month.
Hassan, ending a 30-minute talk with Secretary of State James A. Baker III, also reported “there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes diplomacy” on the subject of an Israeli peace proposal, but withheld judgment on whether it might produce results.
Hassan said he did not discuss a visa for Arafat with Baker. But he said his government has long taken the position that the PLO leader “should be accorded diplomatic recognition on a visit to this country.”
Arafat has been quoted as saying he plans to apply for a visa so he can address the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
