NATION : U.S. to Limit Refugee Admissions to 125,000, Panel Chairman Says

WASHINGTON — The Bush Administration will hold admissions of refugees to the United States to 125,000 in the next fiscal year, an increase of slightly less than 8% from this year, the chairman of a House panel said today.
The Administration, which doubled the allotment for people from the Soviet Union this year to 50,000, has decided that the country cannot handle more and will leave the figure the same for the year beginning Oct. 1, said Rep. Bruce A. Morrison (D-Conn.), who heads the House subcommittee on immigration.
But Morrison, speaking at the start of subcommittee hearings about the Administration’s proposed plan, said the government’s proposal provides funding for only 84,000 refugees.
“Where do we get the money for the rest?” he asked a panel of private witnesses. Government officials will testify Wednesday.
