Navy Capt. Rufus J. Pearson III assumed command of the Naval Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme this week. He replaces outgoing commander Capt. Brian J. O’Connell.

O’Connell, who finished his stint at the two-year post, leaves to become the deputy commander for planning at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Alexandria, Va., said a Navy spokeswoman.

Pearson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963 and earned his master’s degree in civil engineering from Stanford University in 1967.

He has served as a company commander and a battalion operations officer in Vietnam, as deputy officer in charge of construction at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., and as a U.S. Naval Academy instructor and associate chairman for the mechanical engineering department.

In the early 1980s, Pearson also was in charge of the design and construction of facilities at Navy, Marine Corps and selected Air Force sites in 24 Northern states.
