Fishing Notes / Dan Stanton : Surface Action Looking Good, Barracuda, Bonito Hot Locally

The outlook for the remainder of the summer surface action is optimistic.

On the local scene, some barracuda and bonito at rocky point and the rigs are mixed together with yellowtail. Only the sand bass catches have slumped.

San Pedro and Long Beach sportfishing fleets on multiday trips have been chasing albacore and tuna, trolling 150 miles out with success.

The Outerlimits from L.A. Harbor Sportfishing returned early Tuesday morning with 72 albacore, 46 skipjack and one dorado.

The jackpot fish and one of the biggest dorado brought into a South Bay landing this year was caught by Barry Beh of Long Beach, who said the fish jumped out of the water several times and after 25 minutes was decked with help from the crew. It weighed in at 52 pounds.

Beh is having it stuffed for his trophy room.

Long Beach Sportfishing’s El Dorado multiday trip resulted in 175 albacore. Al Modefsoto of Inglewood caught the jackpot fish when he weighed in a yellowfin tuna at 57 1/2 pounds.

The King Harbor Marlin Club was the winner of the eighth annual Marlin Tournament, outpointing the Marina City Anglers.

Both clubs caught a total of four marlin. The King Harbor club released more and earned the most points.

John Whitaker of the King Harbor club was the top angler, with one marlin on 12-pound test line brought to the boat in 25 minutes.

Top boat among the 27 competing was the Genesis, skippered by Robert Goldstein of the Marine City club. The Genesis took two fish, released one and weighed in one at Avalon at 181 pounds.

Steve Vorgitch of Venice recently returned from Cabo San Lucas. While fishing aboard the Mad Dog, he boated the largest marlin caught at Cabo this season, a 385-pounder.

Freshwater Notes:

John Peterson of Culver City, fishing Irvine Lake using marshmallows, reeled in a five-fish limit of catfish.

Debra Dawson of Long Beach, fishing Irvine Lake, used mackerel for bait and reeled in a 10 1/2-pound catfish.

South Bay Catches:

Tom McKindely of Redondo Beach, fishing at rocky point aboard the Redondo Special, caught the whopper of the week with a 31-pound yellowtail.

Bill Powell of Carson, fishing at the rigs aboard the Victory using a jig with 20-pound test line, pulled a yellowtail from the platform. It weighed 28 1/4 pounds.

Alan McFetridge of Torrance, fishing at Catalina Island aboard the Blackjack, won the jackpot with a 26-pound yellowtail.

Carol Lucas of Hermosa Beach, fishing aboard the Hitless Miss at the rigs, caught a 21-pound yellowtail.

Damon Amechin of Westchester, fishing aboard the Sportking at Rocky Point, caught a 16-pound yellowtail.

Donald Coil of Torrance, fishing aboard the Isle of Redondo barge, caught a 16-pound yellowtail.
