A judge today fined the United Mine Workers $13.5 million--nearly double the amount of his previous penalties--for a litany of violations during its strike against the Pittston Coal Group Inc.

The UMW now has been fined $22 million by state and federal judges for violations of injunctions limiting strike activity during the 5 1/2-month-old walkout.

In two previous hearings, Russell County Circuit Judge Donald McGlothlin fined the union $3 million and $4.5 million. U.S. District Judge Glen Williams has fined the union about $1 million.

McGlothlin imposed the new fine today after hearing testimony last week on 60 charges alleged by Pittston.

In addition to fines for specific incidents of violent and nonviolent violations of strike restrictions he issued in July and August, the judge imposed a general penalty of $1 million against the union for failing to control violence.
