Vans will fan out in Mountain View today to release the first daily wave of 2 million sterile Mediterranean fruit flies in the final attack in the area against the feared agricultural pest, Department of Food and Agriculture officials said. The first phase of the dissemination plan begins in the 9-square-mile area surrounding downtown Mountain View where a recent infestation was discovered. The department said it plans to release flies daily through the spring. In all, 30 million sterile medflies will be spread each week into Mountain View, Los Altos and Sunnyvale.
