When members of the Pittsburgh Symphony go to Poland next month, they’ll take along hundreds of gifts for Polish musicians, ranging from the scores of Beethoven’s nine symphonies to new strings for violins. “There is a paper shortage so scores cannot be printed. There is a shortage of strings for violinists and reeds for the oboe,” says Lorin Maazel, music director of the orchestra. Hundreds of items have been collected and will be presented to Poland’s Chopin Academy for distribution. The symphony will play in Warsaw Oct. 11-12 as part of an East European tour that also will take it to Leningrad.
