School Councils’ Balloting Is Slated

Elections of parent and community representatives to decision-making councils have been scheduled Oct. 3, 5 and 10 at most Los Angeles Unified School District schools.

The controversial councils, established in a recent contract agreement between the district and United Teachers-Los Angeles, will have the power to make decisions on staff training, student discipline, event schedules, certain budgets and equipment such as the copying machine. The councils will have eight to 16 members, depending on the size of the school. Half of the members will be teachers, with the remaining seats to be held by the principal and other school employees, parents and community representatives.

Parents and community members who live or work in a school’s attendance area are eligible to run.

Elections will be held at elementary schools Oct. 3, at junior high schools Oct. 5 and at high schools Oct. 10.

Nomination forms, available at school offices, will be due by Sept. 29. Voting will be conducted by secret ballot at the schools.
