A loaded oil tanker that lost all power near where the Exxon Valdez ran aground off Alaska was repaired and allowed to continue its journey south, the Coast Guard reported. Disaster was averted when tugs, escort ships and oil spill response vessels converged on the 906-foot Atigun Pass, attached tow lines, and made sure that the disabled vessel did not drift toward nearby Bligh Reef, where the Exxon Valdez ran aground six months ago, causing the worst oil spill in U.S. history. The tanker was chartered to BP Oil Co. and operated by Keystone Shipping Co. of Philadelphia.
