Law Shielding Officials on Voter Rolls Is Signed

Gov. George Deukmejian signed into law Friday legislation allowing judges and law enforcement officials to request that their home addresses be kept confidential on voter registration records.

The measure by Sen. Bill Lockyer (D-San Leandro) allows active or retired judges, court commissioners, district attorneys, public defenders and peace officers to ask that their home addresses and telephone numbers remain confidential in voter registration records.

The confidential records will be available for the purposes of voter challenges or where a person becomes a candidate for elective office. The confidential portions of the affidavit records also will be available to election officials and candidates for office.
