BACH: “Goldberg” Variations. Rosalyn Tureck, piano. AAD TROY007 (compact disc).

This is one of four programs based on a series of concerts Tureck gave between 1979 and 1984 in the home of columnist William F. Buckley. The playing is precise, authoritative (with only a couple of repeats omitted) and attractive, while the sound is clean and moderately warm. But in the end, the performance seems academic and lacks the dynamic quality that can make the “Goldberg” spring alive as one of the great works in the history of music.
