A veteran deputy district attorney in Los Angeles was appointed Monday by Gov. George Deukmejian to a judgeship in Harbor Municipal Court in Newport Beach.

Deukmejian announced that John M. Watson, 45, of Huntington Beach will replace Judge Russell A. Bostrom, who retired.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Watson said Monday. “I think it’s going to be a wonderful challenge for me. I’ve been in the (Los Angeles County district attorney’s) office for 20 years and I’ve enjoyed it immensely; this represents a new kind of opportunity.”

After earning degrees from Loyola University in 1966 and UCLA in 1969, Watson became a deputy district attorney in 1970.
