Vandalism at Israel Monastery Linked to Polish Convent Flap
Vandals damaged the ruins of an ancient Carmelite monastery in northern Israel in what apparently was a protest against a Carmelite convent at the site of the Auschwitz Nazi death camp in Poland, police sources said today.
The vandals entered the archeological site on Mt. Carmel about two weeks ago and smashed stones and architectural features, police said. Carmelite nuns from the United States, who have been excavating the 13th-Century monastery and chapel for two years, discovered the damage as they prepared to resume their work for the winter season.
Police sources said fanatic Jews demanding the removal of the Auschwitz convent in Poland were probably responsible for the vandalism.
