East L.A. Hospital in Expansion Drive

The White Memorial Medical Center in East Los Angeles has announced plans to raise $2.3 million for expansion and renovation of its emergency department. “This is the first major renovation of the department in 20 years,” said hospital President Harvey Rudisaile, who added that the expansion will allow the center to treat up to 40% more patients.

The newly renovated emergency room is scheduled to open in January, 1990, officials say.

The project comes at a time when many hospitals are trying to curtail their emergency services and close trauma centers, which they contend have generated heavy losses as a result of large numbers of medically uninsured patients.

Hospital officials said that, because of a program of streamlining and other cost-cutting measures, White Memorial is now operating in the black.
