2 Agencies Reject Landfill Compromise
A compromise proposed by the owners of an Azusa landfill to spend up to $20 million to build water treatment plants to help clean polluted water in the San Gabriel Valley was rejected by two local water agencies Wednesday.
Azusa Land Reclamation Co. made the offer in an attempt to gain support for a proposal to quadruple the landfill’s capacity. State and local water officials have fought the expansion, saying landfills eventually leak into the water table regardless of any precautions.
“While your proposal may have some superficial appeal, it really ducks rather than meets the issues,” read a letter to the company signed by Linn Magoffin, chairman of the Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster.
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California also rejected the offer. On Tuesday, the State Water Resources Control Board is scheduled to decide on whether to permit the expansion.
