Nearly all businesses in Haiti were closed and public transportation was halted in a nationwide strike called to protest the military government’s austerity measures. The 24-hour strike was called by 32 groups representing farmers, workers, opposition parties and others. The normally crowded sidewalks of the capital, Port-au-Prince, were virtually empty as street vendors stayed home. The austerity measures, announced last month, include raising tariffs on imports, lowering the ceiling on taxable businesses and raising prices on food.
