WORLD : Walesa Warns Against Price Hikes
Lech Walesa warned Poland’s Solidarity-led government against allowing more huge price rises as it unveiled an economic program today expected to cause Poles more hardship.
Deputy Finance Minister Marek Dabrowski revealed the economic recovery plan to Solidarity members of Parliament in Warsaw. He said living standards would have to drop and it would be at least a year before the economy began to recover.
Walesa told a news conference in the northern city of Gdansk that Poland could face the prospect of civil war as it undergoes capitalist-style reforms to dismantle the remnants of 45 years of Communist rule.
