Computers, a rarity in U.S. schools a decade ago, are now in virtually every school district. But a majority of teachers feel less computer literate than their own students.

“Schools are not doing enough to help teachers become familiar and comfortable with computers,” the National Education Assn. said in a recent report, which also found that only one-third of kindergarten-through-12th-grade teachers had even 10 hours of computer training.

“Teachers are saying that technology has a place in the classroom, but they have to be given the training to use the equipment for personal use or as a teaching instrument,” said Mary Hatwood Futrell, outgoing president of the NEA.

Rolling Stone guitarist Ron Wood’s other artistic side will be on display in Los Angeles at the same time he’s rocking out with the band there.

An exhibit of Wood’s paintings, sketches, etchings, lithographs and carvings will open at the Madison Gallery on La Cienega Boulevard on Oct. 18, the day the Stones begin a stand at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from Oct. 18 to 22.

Among the subjects of Wood’s brush and pen works are his fellow Stones and Chuck Berry.
