More than 600 abandoned children were murdered in 19 months of urban violence in Brazil, according to report presented at a conference in Brasilia, the capital. About 12 million children live on the streets of Brazil. Hundreds of street children from seven Latin American nations gathered at the U.N.-sponsored conference to discuss their plight. In its report, the National Movement of Street Boys and Girls gave details of a study that showed 624 children under the age of 17 were murdered on the streets of Brazil between January, 1988, and July, 1989. It said 24% of the murders were committed by death squads.
