Edwin Moses, two-time Olympic hurdles champion, told a West German magazine that drugs are a major problem in American sports and called for a judicial inquiry.
“The drug problem has spread like a cancer in our sport in the past eight years,” Moses told Stern magazine.
Moses’ comments came one week after Stern published allegations by sprinter Darrell Robinson that he bought growth hormones for Olympic gold medalist Florence Griffith Joyner and he also saw Carl Lewis taking banned drugs. Lewis and Griffith Joyner have denied the allegations, and Griffith Joyner has said she is considering legal action against Robinson.
Meanwhile, the Athletes Advisory Committee of The Athletics Congress, meeting in emergency session, has recommended that an independent investigation be conducted to determine the use of performance-enhancing drugs in track and field.
The Committee also recommended that all current drug investigations against athletes be suspended until the independent investigator is named.
