Steinlager 2 of New Zealand, an 84-foot ketch skippered by Peter Blake, won the first, 6,281-nautical mile leg of the Whitbread Round the World Race when it arrived in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, Thursday, 25 days after leaving England.
Second among the 23 entries from 13 countries was Merit of Switzerland, skippered by Pierre Fehlmann, who won the previous Whitbread in 1985-86. Third was Fisher & Paykel of New Zealand. There are no American entries.
