Gov. George Deukmejian is expected to sign Assembly Bill 1779 into law today, allowing Californians to keep their home addresses confidential in all Department of Motor Vehicles records. The bill was introduced by Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles) after the July 18 slaying of actress Rebecca Schaeffer. Police say her assailant used DMV records to find her address in Los Angeles. The bill was unanimously supported by the Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors. Guild president Barry Gordon, Assemblyman Roos and Los Angeles City Atty. James Hahn will hold a press conference today at 11 a.m. at the Screen Actors Guild national headquarters in Hollywood to explain the details of the bill and to inform the public of their rights under the new law.
