More than 1,000 people demonstrated outside a jail in Taipei, Taiwan, to demand the release of a dissident who was arrested as he sneaked back into the country after 10 years of exile in the United States. Inside the jail, guarded by hundreds of riot police, High Court prosecutor Chen Yao-neng questioned the dissident, publisher Hsu Hsin-liang, about sedition charges filed against him in connection with riots 10 years ago. Most demonstrators were members of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party. The four-hour protest ended without incident. Prosecutors have rejected a request by Hsu’s lawyer that Hsu, 48, arrested last week, be freed on bond.
