2 Killed, 30 Injured in Clashes Between Namibia Factions
Clashes between two political factions vying to lead Namibia into independence left two people dead and at least 30 injured, officials and news reports said Monday.
A 27-year-old man was clubbed to death when he and four friends stopped at a small shop in the northern town of Oshakati on Saturday, said Gerhard Roux, spokesman for Namibia’s adminstrator, Louis Pienaar.
Roux said the victim and his friends were supporters of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance and were attacked by about 80 backers of the South-West Africa People’s Organization, the party favored in elections next month.
Also, a SWAPO supporter was beaten to death in Oshakati, and the homes and shops of party members were attacked in northern towns during the weekend, the Star of Johannesburg said.
Roux said at least 30 people were hurt Sunday, one critically, when people disrupted rallies held by the Democratic Turnhalle alliance around Oshakati.
