The final contingent of Cuban troops stationed in Ethiopia arrived in Havana aboard ship. The pullout of the 725 soldiers marked the end of the Cuban military presence in Ethiopia, which began in 1977 when the Marxist government was fighting a war with Somalia. Cuban troop strength in Ethiopia was at one time over 10,000. The returning soldiers were given special “internationalist” medals and promised preferential treatment in jobs.
