The Needs of the Many
In his Sept. 21 letter, Ventura attorney Louis J. Vigorita uses an overbroad brush in suggesting unanimous opposition to the pending move of the Ventura Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board to “Los Angeles County” (actually, Agoura Hills, a short distance from the Ventura County line in Thousand Oaks).
The move is not unanimously opposed by “the injured workers, the judges, the lawyers, the insurance carriers.” As is often the case with local opposition, whether one opposes a state decision often arises from whose ox is being gored. Attorney Vigorita hails from Ventura and obviously does not relish the drive to Agoura Hills.
As Vigorita correctly acknowledges, the move is prompted by demographics, and by the need to relieve the very overcrowded conditions at the Van Nuys board, which attorney Vigorita complains “make it unbearable.” The allocation of scarce judicial resources should be based upon best meeting the needs of the many and not upon the provincial concerns of the few.
