* The Los Angeles Music Center Opera gala benefit party Sept. 6 celebrated the opening night of “Tosca” at the Music Center and netted $314,200 for LAMCO. Joan Hotchkis, gala committee chair, announced that an additional $51,400 was raised for the opera at a preseason opening night sponsors’ party at the home of Marc and Jane Nathanson.

* The West Coast Friends of Bar-Ilan University in Israel held their annual gala Sept. 7 at the Century Plaza Hotel and honored Lilly Shapell with an honorary doctorate. The gala netted approximately $300,000, not including individual gifts, to benefit the University. Armand Hammer and Nathan Shapell were honorary chairmen. Joyce and Stanley Black were dinner chairs.

* The Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP) on Sept. 15 received a $10,000 grant from the Weingart Foundation to be used for the agency’s kitchen/family room renovation project. The projected amount needed for the renovation is $120,000, which AADAP hopes to raise through contributions and a fund-raising “Bowl for Life” tournament on Nov. 18.

* The Emmy Awards premiere viewing party hosted by L’Ermitage Hotels and Dick Van Patten Sept. 17 at Mondrian Hotel raised $15,000 for two organizations: the Fulfillment Fund, which assists disadvantaged and disabled students, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation, which offers internships for students and professors and maintains one of the world’s largest archives of television programs at UCLA.

* The “Phantom of the Opera” sold-out performance Sept. 19 at the Ahmanson Theatre benefitted the Alfred J. Firestein Diabetes Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, raising over $55,000 to be used for education, research and patient-care. Marie Borofsky and Lynn Klinenberg were chairs.

* The West Coast’s first “Monopoly Power Breakfast” Sept. 20 at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel raised $20,000 for the Ocean Park Community Center homeless programs. Jonathan Tisch, chairman of Loews Hotels, was “chairman of the Monopoly Board.”

* At its annual kick-off luncheon September 21 at the Beverly Hilton, Permanent Charities Committee announced a goal of $2.3 million as entertainment industries begin their annual drive in support of health and human service agencies in Los Angeles. Gene Hackman has been named honorary chairman for the l990 fund-raising campaign. Singer/actress Gloria Loring served as mistress of ceremonies.

* Concern II’s “Casino De Paris” benefit was held Sept. 23 at the Cary Grant Pavilion at Hollywood Park. The event raised $125,000 to be used to help fund the brain tumor research laboratory at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. Rick Powell is president of the all-volunteer Concern II group. Linda Eisenberg, Douglas Golden and Carrie Klein were event co-chairs.

* The “L’Chaim To Life!” Telethon ’89 held Sept. 24 at KCOP-TV raised a total of $5.49 million, establishing a new record for West Coast Chabad’s fund-raising event. Proceeds will be used to combat homelessness, hunger and drug abuse and for Chabad’s other causes. Jerry Weintraub chaired the telethon.

* The Rape Treatment Center at Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center celebrated its 15th anniversary on Sept. 24 in Holmby Hills with more than 600 celebrities, public officials and members of the community lending support. The net proceeds of $600,000 will be used to provide free professional counseling and emergency medical care for rape victims, rape prevention education, legal advocacy and other services for children and adults. Susie Field, Sandra Moss and Adele Yellin were co-chairs.

* Independence Center raised $54,000 at Santa Monica’s “Pier Pressure,” two evenings of gourmet picnic dinners and entertainment by Second City on Sept. 24 and 26. The center is the first program on the West Coast to teach independent living skills to young adults with learning disabilities. Frieda Gockel and Wynne Good were co-chairs.

* The Third Annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts garden party was held Sept. 26 at the Hancock Park home of Consul General Reg and Anna Holloway. Marion Rosenberg, president of BAFTA L.A., presented a check for $20,000 to Roger L. Mayer, chairman of the Fund-Raising Task Force of the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

* The American Parkinson Disease Assn., Southern California Chapter, benefit, “The Lakers Carry the Ball,” honored Dr. Jerry Buss on Sept. 28, at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The event raised $75,000. Lupe Beaver was event chair.
