South Coast Repertory has scored a casting coup, landing Dana Ivey and Elizabeth McGovern for the American premiere of “When I Was a Girl, I Used to Scream and Shout,” to open on the Second Stage in November.

In their SCR debuts, Ivey and McGovern will portray mother and daughter in Scottish playwright Sharman MacDonald’s study of a relationship fraught with competition, love and jealousy.

Ivey, who has received many Tony nominations, created the title role in Alfred Uhry’s 1988 Pulitzer Prize-winning “Driving Miss Daisy.” Among her Broadway credits are “Heartbreak House,” “Present Laughter” and “Pack of Lies.”

McGovern, best known for her roles in such movies as “Ordinary People,” “Ragtime” and the current “Johnny Handsome,” has appeared on stage in New York and Los Angeles in such productions as Tina Howe’s “Painting Churches,” David Hare’s “A Map of the World” and Wallace Shawn’s “Aunt Dan and Lemon.”

Simon Stokes, who directed “When I Was a Girl” in its 1984 London premiere, also has cast Bruce Norris and Katherine Romaine in the four-character drama. Norris has appeared on Broadway in Neil Simon’s “Biloxi Blues” and in various Off Broadway productions. Romaine’s stage credits include appearances at New York’s Apple Corps Theatre and Theatre Virginia.

The production will run Nov. 10 through Dec.10, with previews beginning Nov. 7.
