Simi Chemical Spill Cleaned Up in 5 Hours

A 200-gallon spill of agricultural chemicals in Simi Valley on Friday took about five hours to clean up, but city officials said it posed no threat to the public’s health.

The chemicals, a mixture of the pesticide Sevin and the fungicide Fore, leaked from a lawn-care truck parked in a lot at a Toyota dealership in the 2500 block of First Street, Ventura County Fire Department dispatcher Jackie Noel said.

The cause of the leak was unknown, Noel said. Firefighters blocked off the flow of the liquid and used an absorbent chemical to clean it up, she said.

An undetermined amount of the chemicals drained into a nearby arroyo, Noel said.

But the arroyo is a drainage canal unconnected to the city’s water supply, said Joe Hinsberg, Simi Valley deputy city manager. The spill did not threaten the city’s water supply, he said.

Authorities blocked access to the car dealership’s parking lot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the cleanup but did not bar traffic from adjacent streets, Noel said.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.
