Tax Bills Expected to Garner $4 Billion

The Los Angeles County tax collector’s office is mailing more than 2.1 million property tax bills, according to Barbara Sanchez, spokeswoman for the office.

The 1989 tax bills are expected to bring in $4 billion for the 1989-90 fiscal year, she said.

Property taxes are due and payable Nov. 1. Payment of the bills becomes delinquent and subject to penalty Dec. 11. But payments can be made in two installments with the first payment due by Dec. 11 and the second due by April 10.

Tax bills on property sold after March 1 may be sent to the previous property owners. If new property owners fail to receive a 1989 tax bill by Nov. 6, they should contact the tax collector’s office and request a duplicate bill, Sanchez said.

Requests should include: name, mailing address, the address of the property and, if possible, the assessor’s identification number of the property. The number can be obtained from last year’s bill or a grant deed.

Property owners who fail to pay their property tax by the delinquency dates will be charged a 10% penalty, Sanchez said.

Under state law, failure to receive a tax bill does not allow the treasurer and tax collector to cancel penalties for late payments.
