NATION : Stars & Stripes Military Papers to Shed Top Brass, Don Civvies
The armed services newspaper Stars & Stripes will be run in the future by civilians instead of military officers, the Pentagon’s spokesman said today.
Both the European and Pacific editions of Stars & Stripes--originally designed to serve as a hometown paper for U.S. forces overseas--have been plagued in recent years by allegations of censorship, and in some cases employee harassment.
A Pentagon-appointed ombudsman is in the Pacific looking into the allegations.
“When the current military editors retire, it is our intention to put civilians in there,” Defense Department spokesman Pete Williams said in an interview.
Williams said the Pentagon is also “looking into” the possible financial and editorial consolidation of the newspaper’s two editions.
